How to play Cầu Chữ

Never played a word-guessing game? No problem. The five steps below are illustrated with one example game from start to finish — five minutes and you are playing.

← Back to the game

  1. The game hides an English word of 5 letters. You have 6 guesses to find it.

6 rows are 6 guesses. Each row has 5 squares, one letter each.

This grid of squares is where you guess. The game hides a different word each day, and everyone — your family, your neighbors — is guessing the same word.

  2. Type a 5-letter word, then press “Enter”.

Letters fill the first row. Once you have 5, press the “Enter” key at the left end of the keyboard.

Tap the letters on the keyboard shown under the grid. On a computer, your regular keyboard works too. Made a typo? Press “⌫”.

Can’t think of a word? Guess any 5-letter word you know, say MOUTH. Everyone’s first guess is a shot in the dark — and there is no spell check, any word is accepted.

The grid shakes and nothing happens? You haven’t typed 5 letters yet.

  3. Read the colors: the game tells you about each letter.

Say the hidden word that day is HOUSE. You guess MOUTH. The game colors each square like this:

    • Green with a ✓: right letter, right spot. O and U are right — keep them in those exact squares next time.
    • Gold: the letter is in the word, but in the wrong spot. H is in HOUSE, just not in the last square — next time, try H somewhere else.
    • Dark gray: the letter is not in the word. Drop M and T. On the keyboard, those two keys turn dark so you remember.
  4. Use the colors for your next guess.

Move H to the first square, keep O and U where they are, and try HOURS:

H, O, U are all green — the first three letters are set. S is gold: in the word, but not in the last square. R is not in the word.

After guess 2, clue 1 appears above the grid on its own — the Vietnamese meaning of the word:

    Clue 1nhà, căn nhà

Put it together: it starts H-O-U, there is an S somewhere after, and it means “nhà” (house)… The word is HOUSE!

  5. A whole green row — you win!

    HOUSE solved in 3 guesses.

When you win, the game shows the meaning, an example sentence, and the Bolsa Bridge story the word came from — tap through to meet the word again in context.

Didn’t get it in 6? No harm done: the game shows the answer, and a new word comes tomorrow.

Clues: three levels, revealed as you go

There is no clue for the first two guesses, so you can probe the letters yourself. Then clues appear one by one, from vague to clear:

  • After guess 2 — clue 1: the Vietnamese meaning of the word.
  • After guess 4 — clue 2: the phrase from the story, with the answer blanked out.
  • After guess 5 — clue 3: an example sentence, answer blanked out.
Clue 1nhà, căn nhà
Clue 2open (blank)
Clue 3The open (blank) is this Saturday from 1 to 4. (Buổi mở cửa xem nhà là thứ Bảy này, từ 1 đến 4 giờ.)
All three clues for the HOUSE example, as you would see them on guess 6. The underscores stand where the answer goes.

Don’t want to wait? Press “Open the clue early” above the grid — the next clue appears right away. There is no penalty; your share grid just carries a 💡 so friends know you opened it early. Words without a phrase or example sentence have fewer clues.

Share with family and friends

When you finish, tap “Share your result”. The game copies a color grid like the one below — with no answer in it — for you to paste into Facebook or a text message:

“#5” is the puzzle number, “3/6” means solved in 3 of 6 guesses. Green and gold squares match your grid; dark gray squares become white ⬜.

Whoever gets it sees how many guesses you needed, but not the answer — they can still play it themselves.
