Still need to register to vote? Oct. 19, 2026 is the regular deadline — but Orange County has a late option

The regular deadline to register for California’s November 3, 2026, General Election is Monday, October 19. If you miss it, eligible voters can still conditionally register and cast a provisional ballot in Orange County.

October 12, 2026

Summary — 3 things to remember
  1. Register or update your voter record by October 19, 2026. That is the regular deadline for the November 3, 2026, election.
  2. Missing the deadline does not end your options. Starting October 20, you can conditionally register at the Registrar’s office or an open Vote Center.
  3. Conditional registration comes with a provisional ballot. The Registrar checks your eligibility before counting it; registering online alone does not cast your vote.

What’s happening?

California’s General Election is Tuesday, November 3, 2026. Eligible voters who have not registered, or who need to update their voter record, should do so by the regular deadline: Monday, October 19, 2026.

After that deadline, California allows Conditional Voter Registration, also called same-day registration. The Orange County Registrar of Voters says eligible voters can register and cast a provisional ballot on the same day.

You can do that at the Registrar’s office or an open Vote Center. The Registrar verifies your eligibility and registration before counting the provisional ballot.

This option may help someone who recently became eligible, moved, or missed the regular deadline. A provisional ballot is not counted automatically at the moment it is cast.

If you can act by October 19, 2026

Register online at registertovote.ca.gov. The California Secretary of State offers a Vietnamese-language version at registertovote.ca.gov/vi.

Already registered? Check your record and mailing address at voterstatus.sos.ca.gov. If you moved, confirm that your address is current before waiting for a ballot.

If you miss the regular deadline

From October 20 through Election Day, November 3, 2026, eligible Orange County voters can conditionally register at the Registrar’s office in Santa Ana. The office is at 1300 S. Grand Avenue, Building C, Santa Ana, CA 92705. Voters can also go to an open Vote Center.

Select Vote Centers are open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. October 24–30. All Orange County Vote Centers are open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. October 31–November 2. On November 3, they are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Check the Registrar’s official list of voting locations and hours before you go.

You can begin conditional registration online, but online registration alone does not cast a ballot. To vote, the Registrar says you must go to its office or an open Vote Center, or use its remote accessible vote-by-mail system if eligible.

Three steps to take

Step 1: Check your record at voterstatus.sos.ca.gov.

Step 2: If you are not registered or need to update your record, use the state’s registration site before October 19, 2026.

Step 3: If you missed the regular deadline, check OC Vote’s location and hours page, then register and cast a provisional ballot at a place that is open.

October 19, 2026, is the regular registration deadline, not the last chance for every eligible voter to participate. The Registrar and the Secretary of State provide a conditional-registration process; voters still need to check their record and choose an available voting location.
